Lisbon Portrait Retreat
Lisbon, Portugal | October 4–9, 2026
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this retreat best suited for?
This retreat is designed for photographers (and non-photographer companions) who already have a basic working knowledge of their camera and want to grow creatively—especially in portraiture and storytelling. The focus is less on technical fundamentals and more on seeing, connection, refinement, and confidence in your creative voice. You don’t need to be a professional, but you should feel comfortable using your camera without much technical instruction.
Can I bring a spouse or friend who isn’t a photographer? What will they do while I’m in sessions?
Absolutely. Spouses and non-photographer companions are very welcome on this trip. While the educational sessions are designed for photographers, the retreat itself is intentionally built as a meaningful travel experience. Companions are invited to join all group excursions, shared meals, and cultural activities. During photography sessions, they’re welcome to tag along—or use that time to explore Lisbon at their own pace. We’ll provide ideas and recommendations for neighborhoods, cafés, museums, waterfront walks, and local experiences so they can enjoy the city in a relaxed, unhurried way. Many couples find this balance ideal: time together, time apart, and plenty to talk about at the end of the day.
What does a typical day look like?
By design, days are unhurried and thoughtfully balanced. A typical day may begin with breakfast together, followed by a photo session, creative discussion, or environmental portrait work with locals. Afternoons often include free time to explore, rest, or review images, with optional Photoshop instruction or group conversations woven in. Some evenings we’ll gather for group dinners or shared experiences; other nights are left open for you to enjoy the city at your own pace. This retreat isn’t about filling every hour—it’s about working with purpose and allowing ideas to develop naturally.
Is this more of a workshop or a vacation?
Actually, it is both. You’ll receive meaningful photographic education and hands-on guidance while also enjoying a well-paced travel experience that allows you to truly experience Lisbon—not just pass through it.
What’s included in the retreat—and what’s not?
The retreat includes:
5 nights of accommodations
Daily breakfast + 2 group dinners
2 full-day guided cultural excursions
A hands-on baking class
Daily photo sessions and Photoshop workshops
Airport pickup in Lisbon and transfer to our lodging
Not included are airfare to and from Lisbon or travel insurance.
How many people will be attending?
This retreat is capped at 12 participants to keep the experience personal, supportive, and interactive. Once the group is full, registration will close.
How physically demanding is the trip?
Lisbon does involve walking, but the pace of the retreat is relaxed and flexible. Activities are designed to allow for breaks, downtime, and options. Participation in any activity is always optional.
What gear should I bring?
Bring the camera and lenses you’re most comfortable using. You don’t need specialized or high-end gear—strong images come from observation and connection, not equipment. A suggested packing list will be provided prior to the trip.
Will there be image reviews or feedback?
Yes. We’ll build in time for group discussion, image reviews, and one-on-one feedback throughout the retreat. These conversations are supportive and constructive, focused on helping you refine your vision and strengthen your work.
I want to reserve a spot—what’s the next step?
To reserve a spot, simply email or message us to let us know you’re interested. We’ll send you the registration information, along with details for submitting the deposit to hold your place. Because of limited spaces, spots are reserved on a first come, first served basis once a deposit is received. We’re unable to hold spots without a deposit, and once the retreat is full, we won’t be able to accommodate additional participants.
I still have a few questions—can I talk with you before deciding?
Of course. If you have questions that aren’t answered here—or just want to talk through whether this retreat is the right fit for you—feel free to email or message us. We’re happy to help you decide with clarity and confidence.

Meet your hosts

Larry Lourcey
Portugal has become a place I return to often, and it’s shaped the way I think about both travel and photography. I design these retreats to move beyond the tourist checklist and into everyday life—slow mornings, real conversations, and moments that don’t announce themselves. That’s where the best stories live.
My role on this trip is part teacher, part fellow artist, and part guide. I’ll help you refine your approach to portraiture and storytelling while creating a relaxed, encouraging space to experiment, ask questions, and grow. My goal is simple: for you to leave feeling more confident, more inspired, and more connected—to your work and to the people you photograph.

"PG" Phaneendra Gudapati
Whether it’s refining a portrait, shaping a visual narrative, or polishing an image in post-production, he has a knack for helping photographers see what’s possible—and then showing them how to get there. On this retreat, PG will be a constant creative resource, especially when it comes to Photoshop, finishing, and elevating your work. Between the two of us, you’ll get both the big-picture storytelling mindset and the technical refinement that turns a strong image into a finished piece you’re proud to share.
